Privacy & Cookies
The short, honest version. Hereafter is a small browser game made by two people (Nick Thompson and Gareth Wells). We collect as little as we can, we do not sell anything, and there are no advertising trackers.
What we store
- If you make an account: your username, an optional email (only if you give one, for account recovery), and your passphrase stored hashed and salted (we never see it). Plus your saved towns.
- If you publish a town: that town, its name, your mayor name and its story become public on the Atlas and Explore pages. You can unpublish it at any time.
- If you send feedback: what you wrote (anonymously, unless you choose to identify yourself).
- Basic analytics: page views and in-game events (e.g. "started a game"), so we can see what works. This is handled by PostHog (hosted in the EU) and our own server log, which records your IP address and browser type for counting visits and preventing abuse.
Cookies & local storage
We use your browser's local storage to keep you signed in and remember your town between visits. Our analytics (PostHog) may set a cookie or local-storage entry to count unique visits and sessions. That is all. No advertising cookies, no third-party ad tracking, and we do not sell or share your data.
Your choices
- You can play the whole game without an account and without giving an email.
- If you would like your account or data deleted, ask us through the feedback page and we will remove it.
- You can clear the game's cookies and local storage any time in your browser settings.
Children
Salem is cosy and non-violent, but it is not aimed at young children and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
It is early days and this may change as the game grows. Anything material, we will note here. Last updated June 2026.
